Junior & 16U National Championships

Qualification Procedures

 

The intent of this document is to communicate the procedures and people involved in the planning and coordination of sending a State Wrestling Team to represent the Hawaii Federation of USA Wrestling at the Junior & 16U National Championships conducted by USA Wrestling each year. Our State Wrestling Team will be referred to as the Hawai`i National Team.

 

There are three important steps for ATHLETES & COACHES to join the Hawai`i National Team:

STEP 1: How to Apply

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT APPLICATION IS: MAY 26th, 2024

All athletes and coaches applications will be reviewed and approved by the Junior & 16U Committee.

*Late applicants will be considered if there are still open slots/entries at the weight class and division that they apply for.

 

STEP 2: How to Qualify for Nationals

Hawai`i is allowed 4 entries per weight, plus 2 extra at any weight, for boys AND girls. 

Division and weights:

  • 16U Men: (Born 2007-2008) 88, 94, 100, 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220, 285 

  • Junior Men: (Born September 1, 2003 and after plus currently enrolled in grades 9-12) 100, 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220, 285

  • 16U Women: (Born 2007-2008) 94, 100, 106, 112, 117, 122, 127, 132, 138, 144, 152, 164, 180, 200

  • Junior Women: (Born September 1, 2003 and after plus currently enrolled in grades 9-12) 100, 106, 112, 117, 122, 127, 132, 138, 144, 152, 164 180, 200, 225

 

Qualifications for Athletes

  1. Submit an application by May 26th, 2024* see link above

  1. Purchase a USAW FULL ATHLETE Membership and maintain in good standing.

  1. Find a club coach that will be coaching at Nationals and train with them, as well as coordinate your travel with them. Contact the National Team Coordinator for a list of attending coaches.

  1. Purchase both a red and blue State approved Singlet.  

  2. Compete in the HFUSAW Freestyle & Greco State Championship*

 

After the application deadline has passed:

If there are more applicants than the allotted amount of entries at any specific weight class, a special qualifier will be announced for that specific weight class and athletes notified by May 31st, 2024.  This special qualifier will be held at the 2024 Freestyle & Greco State Championships.

 

If there are less applicants than the allotted amount listed above, then you are automatically qualified and no qualifier will be held.  However, competing in the Freestyle & Greco State Championship is still required.

 

OPTIONAL: Another way to qualify is to attend a Regional Tournament and finish in the top 6.  This automatically qualifies you for Nationals in the weight class you competed at in Regionals.

Regional Competitions:

  • Northwest Regionals, March 23-24 in Centralia, WA

  • Western Regionals, May 9-11, Herriman, UT

  • Northeast Regionals, May 10-12, Atlantic City, NJ

  • Northern Plains Regionals, May 10-12, Rochester, MN

  • Central Regionals, May 19-21, Fort Wayne, IN

  • Southeast Regionals, May 17-19, Fort Wayne, IN

  • Southern Plains Regionals, May 31-June 2, Mulvane, KS

 

Qualifications for Coaches

  1. Submit an application by May 26th, 2024.*

  1. Purchase a USAW Wrestling Leader Membership and maintain in good standing.

  1. Complete the USAW NCEP Bronze certification course

 

*Exceptions to the qualifications with an asterisk may be made by submitting a petition via email to the National Team Coordinator*

 

STEP 3: How to Commit

Submit a Commitment Form

DEADLINE TO COMMIT IS JUNE 10TH, 2024

National Team Coaches will be emailed a commitment form that they will submit via email to the National Team Coordinator by June 12th, 2023.  This commitment form will include all qualified and approved coaches, athletes, and chaperones traveling with their delegation to Fargo, ND.  Athletes must communicate with their coach and ensure that their name is added to a National Team Coach's commitment form.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF ALL ATTENDEES

The event schedule that is communicated via the National Team Coordinator is mandatory (i.e. team practices, team warm-ups, and team meetings).

The entire Hawai`i National Team delegation is required to adhere to all of USAW policies and code of conduct at all times.

Parents and family members are not allowed to take any kids other than their own to do extracurricular activities. (National Team Coaches may take athletes included on their commitment form on group outings.)

Failure to adhere to these requirements will be reviewed case-by-case, and when necessary result in immediate removal from the event and its premises.

 

RECOMMENDED:

  1. Attend ALL Team Hawai`i practices.  Sundays at Noon - Freestyle at UH Labs in Manoa.  Fridays at 5pm - Greco at Moanalua

  2. Attend ALL Team Hawai`i Training Camps. June 3-6th

  3. Compete in ALL local events

  4. Compete in Regional and National events prior to the Junior & 16U Nationals

 

Leadership Roles

Duties and Responsibilities

 

Junior & 16U Committee

  • Provide oversight to the preparation, planning, and coordinating of athletes, coaches, and chaperones attending the event.

  • Aid in the selection of the National Team Coordinators and National Team Coaches, with final approval given from the HFUSAW Board.

  • Approve exceptions and other issues as they arise.

 

National Team Coordinators (2)

  • Arrive before or with the Hawaii National Team delegation and depart after or with the Hawai`i National Team delegation

  • Plan a daily schedule for trip duration, including team meetings. Reserve practice times in between competition and team warm-up times and locations prior to competition.

  • Communicate and Delegate duties to National Team coaching staff.

  • Pickup and distribute ID cards.

  • Pay dorm fees and check in teams to dorms

  • Verify and pay team entries before each division competes

  • Assist with coaching athletes without a coach in their corner.

  • Attend USAW committee meetings and vote as a representative of Hawai`i

  • Coordinate Team Hawai`i practices within our State leading up to the event. Consult and encourage other knowledgeable coaches to contribute as well.  Priority should be given to Bronze level coaches attending National, Regional, and Western States Championships.

  • Assist with the preparation, planning, and coordinating of athletes, coaches, and clubs prior to the event.

  • Assist with promotion and education of the Hawai`i National Team



 

National Team Coaching Staff

  • Once your coaches application is approved by the committee, each applicant will be considered a National Team Coach and a member of the National Team Coaching Staff.

  • Assume responsibility for athletes listed on their commitment form

  • Coordinate and manage travel for athletes listed on their commitment form

  • Work with the Coordinators on a daily schedule, including practice times, competition warm-up times, team meetings, and coaches meetings.

  • Communicate with all coaches, athletes, and chaperones.

  • Participate and assist with running practices and warm-ups.

  • Assist with coaching athletes without a coach in their corner.

  • Recommend attending USAW committee meetings in Fargo.

  • Attend ALL Hawaii National Team Coaches Meetings

  • Contribute and participate in Team Hawai`i practices within our State leading up to the event. 

  • Assist with the preparation, planning, and coordinating of athletes, coaches, and clubs prior to the event.
